Although Upper Mbagathi River Study is at the moment focussing on the biological, chemical and physical analysis of the actual river, one of the most important indicators of a well protected and cared for river system is a well marked and established riparian zone.
Because of their prominent role in supporting a diversity of species, riparian zones are often the subject of national protection in a Biodiversity Action Plan.
